Picking a name is a very important decision. There are many things you should take into consideration when picking a name. Usually, it’s best for your business name to represent what you will be offering. For example, Deckci Decor is an event decor company – so we included “Decor” in the name. Where did the “Deckci” come from? It was a combination of my business partner and my last names. For The Woof Room, it isn’t immediately clear what we are offering – but one can presume it is dog related. We wanted it to sound somewhat upscale because of the clientele we’d be serving.
So how should you go about picking a business name?
- Research competitors. See what similar businesses have for their names. This will help you in brainstorming ideas (but don’t copy or sound too similar!).
- Pick something you like and makes sense
- Most importantly, make sure the domain name is available and someone else isn’t using it
For all three businesses, it began with brainstorming names – and immediately checking online to see if the domain was available. If the domain was available, they went on a list. The list of 3-5 names was sent to close family and friends for thoughts and then the decision was made.
