Who am I?

I’m Kristen Cici, wife of Phil and mommy to two amazing children – Chase (born in 2010) and Samantha (born in 2011). We have two sweet, loving miniature schnauzers, Lola and Josie. We live in Minnesota where the summers are hot and the winters are sub-zero!

I’ve been an avid blog reader for years, and some of my favorites are Money Saving Mom, Happy Black Woman, and Sweet Pickens. I’ve also blogged on and off for a few years – but it’s been more professional blogging. I always enjoy reading blogs of others and they often give me motivation, so I thought it would be fun to start one of my own to share our story (and my thoughts). I hope you enjoy!

What else do I do?

When I’m not blogging or spending time with my family, I’m running three businesses – The Advancement Company, The Woof Room, and Deckci Decor. I founded The Advancement Company back when I was working on my bachelor’s degree, which provides evaluation assistance to nonprofit organizations, government agencies, businesses, and educational institutions. I’ve been fortunate enough to have worked with some pretty awesome nonprofits, including the MS Society, Twin Cities Pride, Greater Minneapolis Council of Churches, Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, FamilyMeans, YouthCARE, Minnesota Fathers & Families Network, The Bridge for Youth, Phyllis Wheatley Community Center, Children’s Advocacy Network, Lind-Bohanon Neighborhood Association, and Baby Steps. I’ve also done contract evaluation projects for Normandale Community College and the University of Minnesota. I’ve been involved with nonprofits all of my adult life and most of my youth as a volunteer, board member, staff member, and consultant. I love helping nonprofits take a in-depth look at their programs and mission to see how they have been connecting. I also blog about nonprofits and evaluation at NonprofitSOS.

I also spend more time than you can imagine dealing with laundry at Deckci Decor, an event decor and planning business I started with my best friend from high school. What started as a fun project has turned into a small business that serves over 250 events each year. It’s so much fun helping people make their special day perfect!

We are also huge dog lovers – and I’ve served on the Board of Directors of Pet Haven Inc of Minnesota since 2006. So, it was only natural for us to start a dog daycare and hotel, The Woof Room. It’s so much fun to be able to get to know the hundreds of dogs that visit The Woof Room each month (and their owners are great too)!

      It’s actually easier than you’d think 🙂 Deckci and The Woof Room both individuals in manager/supervisor roles so that’s helped a lot. It actually lets me spend a lot more time with the children than if I worked a regular 9-5. Plus I love working for myself!
